BEST Robotics Competition to be Held Saturday at MSCC

Seven area schools will participate Saturday in the Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology robotics competition at Mid-South Community College.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. at the college's Workforce Technology Center on the North Campus.

“The BEST robotics competition combines the best aspects of a sporting event, a chess game, and a science fair," says Dianne Langford, director of the Arkansas Delta Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Project at MSCC.

“The competition allows our students - our future technology specialists - to participate in a fun event that we hope will motivate them to become catalysts for significant inventions of the 21st century."

Schools registered to compete include West Memphis East Junior High School, West Memphis West Junior High School, West Memphis High School, West Memphis Christian, Benton High School, Marvell Middle School, and the Home School Association.

Iggle Piggle co-star 'fired over suit complaint'

In another incident in May 2006, Mr Blake says he suffered pelvic injuries after being asked to lean over for long periods while wearing the pink and brown bear suit. After visiting hospital he was signed off work for a week with an injured pelvis.

Mr Blake added: "I do believe in my heart of hearts that if I didn't mention anything about the suit or the verbal abuse, I would still be working at Ragdoll now.

"I complained that the choreography caused me pain but I was told to carry on regardless.

"It was fun being a teddy bear, it was a fun job. If I had just shut my mouth and took the abuse, I would still be there."

In The Night Garden is a BBC children's television series, particularly aimed at babies and preschool children, produced in 2005 by Ragdoll Productions.

Kara Walker pushes boundaries

New York — It's the day before Kara Walker's solo show opens at her gallery in the heart of Chelsea's art district. Passers-by hoping for a sneak peek stoop to peer beneath the half-lowered shades. Callers inquire whether she will be present at the reception — people who want to meet her, or even, the gallery owner suggests, touch her, as groupies would a rock star.

The 37-year-old Walker is not just a star. In today's art world, she is a supernova. And this is the former Atlantan's moment: A triumphant retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, one of three exhibits in New York alone. She's on magazine covers, in bookstores. Critics suggest comparisons to Goya, the venerated Spanish Old Master.

Casey Saccomanno, a senior fashion design major, was awarded one of the first $25,000 Geoffrey Beene National Scholarships Jan. 9 at the YMA Geoffrey Beene Fashion Scholarship Dinner in New York.

"This is a huge award, a huge honor," said Saccomanno, who was one of four student winners announced at the dinner. The other winners were from Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons The New School for Design and the University of Colorado, Boulder.

"This is truly a great accomplishment for Casey to be recognized at this major industry event and for the University to be recognized as a preeminent institution for educating the future leaders of the industry," said Clara Henry, director of the university's Fashion Design program.

In addition to the $25,000 award, Saccomanno and two other Philadelphia University fashion design students, Janelle Frank and Sandra Huffaker, won YMA scholarships of $5,000 each, which had been previously announced.
